Social Science
Research Grants Program (SSRGP)
Institute
for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research
Deadline:
Monday, March 31, 2008
Purpose
The UCSB Institute for Social,
Behavioral, & Economic Research, in conjunction with the Dean of Social
Sciences, College of L&S, the Vice Chancellor for Research, and the Executive
Vice Chancellor announces the 2008 Call for Proposals for the Social Science
Research Grants Program (SSRGP). The
purpose of this program is to enrich the quality of research in the social
sciences at UCSB by means of a competitive program of awards to faculty, aimed
at fostering the development of innovative research in the social
sciences. Research using any of the
methodological or theoretical paradigms within the social and humanistic social
sciences is welcome. All eligible faculty members are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility
Ladder faculty members of all
ranks are eligible to submit proposals. Project
teams may include faculty outside the Social Science Division, professional
researchers, or researchers from other campuses, as long as the lead
investigator has ladder rank within the Division of Social Science within the
Criteria
The
program will fund research projects at all stages of development, as long
as there will be an identifiable outcome or product from the funded activity.
Priority will be given to projects
likely to lead to extramural funding. Faculty who have never received funding under
the SSRGP are especially encouraged to apply.
However, all proposals for social science research projects will
be considered. A list of all previously
funded projects is available on the ISBER website at: http://www.isber.ucsb.edu/ssrgp-awards
.
Budgets and allowable expenses
The maximum allowable request under this program is $8,000. The program will permit the following types of funding when adequately justified:
- travel
(domestic or international): for the
purpose of research, collaboration, or meeting with potential funding sources
- research
assistance: UCSB graduate or
undergraduate students only; no postdocs
- research
expenses, supplies, & services
- publication
costs (e.g., purchase of maps, prints, etc.)
- replacement
funding to permit release from teaching for junior faculty only,
up to $2,500, subject to approval by the faculty member's department chair. Dean Oliver has agreed to match all release
time awards, making the total reimbursement to departments $5,000. Release time requests in this funding cycle
must be for academic year 2008-2009.
Items
that will not be funded:
- faculty
salaries (other than release time, as specified above)
- equipment
costing more than $500
- conference

Timeline for proposed
work and award administration
All projects funded in this cycle
will have a start date of May 15, 2008 and an end date of June 30, 2009. Upon written request and adequate
justification, a 1 year extension will be granted. All project funds will be directly
administered by ISBER.
Evaluation and review
The competitive review of eligible
proposals will be undertaken by an interdisciplinary committee of social
science faculty. Proposals will be
reviewed for their quality, significance, clarity, feasibility, and promise for
future extramural funding. Funding
decisions will be provided by late April, 2008.
